Ancient MEXiCO Life, S3x and Marriage | aztec documentary
The Aztecs were an indigenous Mesoamerican civilization that flourished in central Mexico from the 14th to the 16th centuries. Here is a description of the people of the Aztec civilization:
Ethnicity and Language:
The Aztecs were a Nahuatl-speaking people. Nahuatl was the language spoken by the majority of the population, and it is still spoken by some indigenous communities in Mexico today.
Social Structure:
Aztec society was hierarchical and stratified. At the top of the social hierarchy was the ruler, who held both political and religious authority. Below the ruler were the nobility, priests, and warriors. The commoners, including farmers, artisans, and merchants, formed the majority of the population.
Economy and Occupation:
The Aztecs were skilled farmers who utilized advanced agricultural techniques such as chinampas, artificial farming platforms in lake areas. Maize (corn), beans, and squash were staple crops. Additionally, they engaged in trade, both within their own empire and with neighboring regions.
Religion and Cosmology:
The Aztecs had a polytheistic religion with a complex pantheon of gods and goddesses. They believed in a cyclical view of time and had a dualistic cosmology where the world went through cycles of creation and destruction. Rituals and ceremonies, often involving human sacrifices, were central to their religious practices.
Art and Culture:
Aztec art was intricate and colorful, often featuring religious and mythological themes. They created elaborate codices (manuscripts) that documented their history, rituals, and beliefs. The Aztecs were also known for their impressive architecture, including the renowned Templo Mayor in the capital city of Tenochtitlan.
Military and Warfare:
The Aztecs were formidable warriors and their military played a crucial role in expanding their empire. The elite warrior class, known as the Eagle and Jaguar warriors, were highly trained and played a central role in both warfare and religious ceremonies.
Daily Life:
The daily life of the common people involved a combination of agricultural work, craftsmanship, and trade. Families were important units, and extended families often lived together. Clothing varied based on social status, with the nobility wearing more elaborate attire.
Downfall:
The Aztec civilization came to an end with the arrival of the Spanish conquistadors, led by Hernán Cortés, in the early 16th century. The introduction of new diseases, military conflicts, and political alliances with indigenous groups opposed to the Aztecs contributed to the downfall of their empire.
The Aztecs left a lasting impact on the cultural and historical landscape of Mexico, and their legacy is still visible in the traditions and customs of modern-day indigenous communities in the region.
