When Angels Cry

Kenyon had just finished washing his car and was detailing the interior. His 2-year-old daughter snuck out of the house, crawled through a mud puddle, and climbed on top of the car, leaving muddy footprints all over the hood and windshield. She just wanted to say ‘hi’ to dad. A week later she and her brother were gone. Their mother took them out of state and disappeared. Those footprints were all Kenyon had left of his children. He couldn't wash the car. Months later, after exhausting every means of finding them, Kenyon was driving along an old highway and it started to rain. He panicked, swerved to the side of the road, jumped out and stood over the footprints sobbing, trying to cover them with his hands to prevent them from being washed away. He lost the battle and upon returning to an empty house, Kenyon wrote this song.

A note from Kenyon: “This song goes out to everyone with missing children, I know your pain, I honor you and grieve with you.”

It reads like a loving message from a father to his young daughter and encapsulates the essence of that unbreakable bond. There are Christian underpinnings that add to the feeling of family, which is present throughout the entire song. Grey sings with an approachable yet commanding presence. It is the perfect voice for a tune like this, and blends in seamlessly with the lyrics. Particular to “When Angels Cry” is its driving and exciting chorus. It is here where the tune seems to take on new life and turns up the energy. With the release of "When Angels Cry", Kenyon Grey gives listeners a look into his life and reminds us of the importance of family.

Strongest Point(s): The message in "When Angels Cry" is very strong and touching. For those who have ever had to be away from loved ones for a time, it is extremely relatable. The guitar work is also very well done. The solo makes just strong enough of a statement to be memorable and push the tune forward but does not steal the light. As mentioned above, the chorus has a noticeably different sound than the rest of the tune. It takes on a bit more of a Rock edge and really increases the enthusiasm. This is a very easy and enjoyable listen by Kenyon Grey that shows promise for his work.
