Bushfire On Kangaroo Island
Occurred on January 5, 2024 / De Mole River, Kangaroo Island, South Australia, Australia
Info from Licensor: "Bushfire contained on Kangaroo Island. A grassfire was accidentally started yesterday at the De Mole River, on the northwest of Kangaroo Island, only a couple of hundred metres from one of our apiaries. With extremely strong southerly winds, it quickly spread into bushland and was threatening the nearby Kangaroo Beach Lodges. Approximately 400 acres of steep scrub and grassland were burnt, however, thousands of acres were saved in a huge effort from all involved. With the majority of native vegetation on Kangaroo Island still recovering from the 2020 bushfires and not yet producing the nectar bees need to make honey, this native vegetation property is a critical resource to keep our bees healthy and productive. The Kangaroo Island Ligurian Bee Co wishes to thank all the CFS volunteers, the DEW staff, the farm firefighters, Nick and Lena, Lachy Harvey and family, Marcus and Daniel and their earthmoving machines, the landowners and everybody else who worked hard through the night to successfully contain the fire and save the buildings and the bees."
