THERE’S A GIANT MYSTERIOUS HOLE IN THE CENTER OF ANTARCTICA AND SCIENTISTS ARE RUSHING TO UNDERSTAND WHY

In 2017 a hole the size of Ireland opened up in Antarctica.

This hole, known as Polynya, is nothing new - except that, at 78.000 km, it is the largest hole observed since the 1970s and the first to be discovered in 40 years.

Scientists aren't quite sure why the polynyas came into being.

They're still working to understand the effects of these weird giant holes.
