A Polish Christmas Classic with a Greek Twist! Greek-Style Fish with Sweet And Sour Vegetable Mix.
"Ryba po Grecku," or Greek-style Fish, is one of the most beloved dishes on the Polish Christmas Eve table. While it has nothing to do with Greece, it shares a striking resemblance to the Greek Psari Plaki.
Join us in this culinary journey as we prepare this mandatory Christmas dish in many Polish households, infusing it with a touch of Greek inspiration.
🐟 Ingredients:
250g of fish (Feel free to use your favorite; we opted for pollock)
Flour
Olive oil (for frying fish and vegetables)
3 medium-sized carrots
Half a celery root (or about 1/3 of the carrot's weight)
2 onions
Half a lemon
25g of tomato paste
2 bay leaves
4 allspice berries
Half a teaspoon of thyme (forgot to mention in the ingredients)
1.5 teaspoons of salt
1 flat teaspoon of pepper
If the fish was frozen, ensure it's thawed the day before and pat it dry with a paper towel. Season the fish with salt and pepper.
Peel and grate the vegetables, and slice the onions into strips of the same length as the other vegetables. Sauté the onions in cold olive oil until translucent. Add carrots, celery, and spices. After a few minutes, add tomato paste (2-4 teaspoons). Five minutes later, add water, cover, and simmer until the vegetables are tender.
In the last 2-3 minutes of simmering, add grated lemon zest (not the entire peel) and squeeze half a lemon. Coat the fish in flour and fry it in the remaining olive oil until golden.
Layer the bottom of a dish with a thin layer of the vegetable mixture, then arrange the fish and cover it with another layer of the mixture. The fish should absorb the flavors of the carrots and tomato sauce, so it's best prepared a day in advance and refrigerated.
