"There is systematic abuse [of the asylum system] and the authorities have been gruesomely negligent in failing to deal with it... There are pitiful few deportations and the State should not be a soft touch, but it has been a soft touch at every corner."
Ciara Doherty attempts to challenge his remarks on the grounds that someone might still be entitled to asylum though their country of origin might be considered safe. It’s a argument made by people who either choose to be uninformed or are deliberately concealing the facts about refugee acceptance rates.
In 2018, 3% of Georgians were granted refugee status as were 5% of Nigerians when they both featured in the list of top five countries of origin.
In 2017, not one Georgian, Nigerian or Algerian was granted refugee status when they all featured in the top ten.
The top three groups seeking asylum last year were Georgians, Algerians and Nigerians (who've been allowed to game the system for the past 25 years).
