The praying mantis is a carnivorous insect with a prayer-like posture and folded forelimbs.

There are about 1,800 species of praying mantids worldwide, and they are well-camouflaged, adapting colors that help them blend with plants. They have long necks topped by a triangular head and can turn their heads 180 degrees.

They are predaceous, feeding on virtually anything they can catch, such as flies, beetles, crickets, moths, and grasshoppers, and larger species of tropical mantids will also eat other animals, such as lizards, frogs, or even hummingbirds.

Many gardeners and farmers welcome mantids because the insects they eat are often pests that hurt crops.
