Christianity into Tibet

António de Andrade was a Jesuit priest and explorer from Portugal. He entered the Society ( Original Jesuits of Paris France ) of Jesus in 1596.
He was also involved in missionary work in India (1600-1634).
Andrade was the first known European to have went through the Himalayas and reached Tibet - the first Christian mission on Tibetan soil.

He went north into the Himalayas with other pilgrims enduring altitude sickness and snow blindness. Andrade fought his way over a 17,900-foot pass into Tibet reaching Zaburang - the capital of the western Tibetan kingdom of Guge གུ་གེ་. Because of his piety, the king and queen allowed him to return, establish a mission, and preach the Gospel.

In 1626, King Chadakpo personally laid the cornerstone of the Church of Our Lady of Hope—the first church in Tibet. The king paid for all the building costs. He showed great interest in the mission work and often went into the church to pray and ask the missionaries deep questions about Christianity.

King Chadakpo spared no expense in encouraging the missionaries to spread the Gospel message. He had wood brought in from another country because of the lack of trees in the Guge region. The wood was needed to make crosses for the church. The king also decided to completely cover a cross with brass. It was erected at the highest point of the city - to be seen from all directions when the sun reflected off it.

In 1630, the Tibetan Christians were singled out for retribution. They were either sold into slavery or sent into exile, while the church and missionaries’ houses were demolished.
