The Unfinished GIANT STATUES of Minya | Bigger Than BAALBEK
At the outskirts of the city of Minya in Middle Egypt, right next to the nile river, lies a relic that is rarely spoken about. This ancient site is home to a remarkable limestone quarry where you’ll find the remains of an enormous unfinished statue.
THE COLOSSUS OF MINYA.
The outline of a statue of an Egyptian king has been chiselled onto the upper surface of the giant block, and so we know that this stone was being quarried to make what would have been one of the largest and greatest statues of ancient Egypt.
This statue is a huge block of limestone which is 22 meters long, 8 meters wide, and around 8.5 meters tall or deep. Based on the rock type and the dimensions, some speculate that this block in the quarry of Minya could weigh more than 2000 tons, which means it is larger than the blocks at Baalbek and heavier than the unfinished obelisk of Aswan, which weighs around 1200 tons.
There are vertical trenches on all four sides of the block which are around 50 centimetres wide and up to 8.5 meters deep. You can even go down and walk along these trenches to see the statue up close.
Only about 30 to 40 meters away from the unfinished statue lies another gigantic monument which appears to be an unfinished obelisk.
This unfinished obelisk is 21 meters long and 2,5 meters wide. What makes it also unusual is the fact that it is made from limestone and not aswan granite.
after checking out the obelisk, we walked back to the lower part of the giant unfinished statue.
What really blows our mind is the question of how they would remove this 2000-ton statue from the quarry. It seems like the ancient builders left some clues for us.
Under the giant limestone block, there are some horizontal passages which are around 60 centimetres high. It seems like these tunnels were supposed to be part of the removal process, but the exact procedure is unknown.
Egyptologists believe that the statue may have been intended to depict King Ramses II. Ramses II was known for his many monumental building projects, including the temples at Abu Simbel and Luxor.
Despite the fact that the statue was never completed, it remains one of the most impressive examples of ancient Egyptian technology. It serves as a testament to the incredible skills of the ancient builders who created it.
