When the brave folk on the RSPCA in Northumberland, UK, received a call that a dog had been trapped in the middle of a frozen river, they knew they had no time to waste! Hardy the black Labrador had wandered off his owner’s property, found himself in the middle of the icy river, when the frozen layer cracked under his weight and trapped him there for an hour.

Inspector Jaqui Miller was called to the River Wansbeck at Black Close Bank in Ashington on December 13. Northumberland Fire and Rescue Services requested help from the RSPCA after the nearby rowing club had raised the alarm.

The firefighters attached a rope to inspector Miller’s waist, so that they can hoist her right back up safely. On her belly and with an ice hook in hand, Jaqui crawled in the direction of the scared 9-year-old pup, talking to him all the way.

Hardy was quite far from the bank and was half submerged in the frozen water with his paws clinging to the edge of the ice. “He had been out walking with his dog walker when he had run into the river not realising that the minus six degree weather we’ve had recently had frozen the water. His dog walker told us he’s so used to paddling in the river and the sea that he just bounded off hoping for a little swim.

As Jaqui got closer to the mischievous pup, she could hear him whimpering from the cold. As soon as she reached him, she grabbed Hardy by the neck and tried to pull him out, but the ice kept crumbling beneath them. A few pushes helped the dog out of the water and running towards his walker.

Other than a small nick on his paw and a lot of icy water in his fur, Hardy was fine and ready to get pampered of some sausages.
