Rare footage, so far, of the Tsunami waves generated by the 7.4 Magnitude Earthquake off the West Coast of Japan on the 1st January 2024.

West Coast Japan: Large breakers can be seen breaching a harbour seawall.

However there have been no widespread reports of inland inundation and destruction caused by Tsunamis such as that which occurred during the Great East Coast Earthquake and Tsunami of 2011.

Many people are sharing one particular video of the 2011 Tsunami in the city of Minamisanriku in Miyagi Prefecture, and claiming it is footage of a Tsunami on New Year's Day 2024.

That is not the case. It's not even on the same coastline.
Be wary of old footage being passed off as now.

The Tsunami that happened yesterday, was a mere piss in the ocean compared to 2011. Yesterday's Earthquake caused more damage than the Tsunami that followed.

It was a different story in 2011 though, wave heights ranged from 8 metres to 38 metres in some areas, travelled up to 5kms inland and caused total destruction and massive loss of life. As you can see from the following videos, which includes the footage of the devastation at Minamisanriku, which is being passes off as now.
