Inside DERINKUYU Underground City | Why Nobody asks these Questions? 🤔

The first thing you notice when you approach the entrance area of Derinkuyu, are the Ventilation Shafts which also serve as water wells.

After paying the entrance fee, we submerged ourselves in the underground city of Derinkuyu.

Only about 15% percent or less is open for public.

What is very strange about the Underground cities of Cappadocia is that you won't find any wall paintings, inscriptions, hieroglyphs or any type of decoration. We were wondering why the ancient people who lived down here never decorated the walls or is it even possible that it has been removed later on?

You can see that many tunnels and entrances have been closed in different periods of time

We were wondering how was it possible to light up the Underground Cities without electricity since we never found any soot residue on the walls or the ceilings.

Many areas have not been excavated yet.

All the stairs look very new and have been created in recent times.

As we go deeper in the underground city we noticed that the tunnels becomes smaller and smaller but the rooms are bigger bigger than the ones on the upper levels.

The reason why archaeologists believe that there was a church down there is because of the cross shape of the room.

After doing further research and talking to the locals, we were able to confirm that there is indeed a 9km long tunnel connecting Derinkuyu Underground City to Kaymakli Underground City. There is even another tunnel connecting to the Underground City of Soganli.

The air is surprisingly fresh in the entire underground city. Clearly there is a good ventilation system.

Another interesting fact is that the Underground city had no sewage or waste water system.
The deep air ventilation shafts were the only fresh water source for the people of Derinkuyu but they could not have used the same Ventilation Shaft to dump their waste water because they would have poisoned themselves.

How did all this 20-70k people do their toilet everyday and wash themselves??? As far as we know this question has not really been addressed by archaeologists until today.

There is also a big Greek orthodox church standing right on top of the underground city.

Unfortunately we were not able to visit the church because it was closed for renovation until March 15, 2023
