It’s January 1st, 2024 and today Disney officially loses the copyright of the image for their early Mickey Mouse from the animated short Steamboat Willie.

The image of this early Mickey Mouse is going into the public domain despite efforts by the company to maintain ownership of the character created by Walt Disney nearly 100 years ago. This isn’t to say Disney no longer has ownership of that character of Mickey Mouse or the name “Mickey Mouse.” Winnie the Pooh was another popular Disney character that recently entered the public domain and was turned into the horror money featuring the iconic character as a murderer.
