Up to ten thousand of emperor penguin chicks died due to the melting of sea ice in Antarctica, according to British Antarctic Survey experts.

Before the chicks could grow the water-resistant feathers required to swim in the ocean, the sea-ice beneath them melted and disintegrated.

The birds most likely died from drowning or being frozen to death.

The event took place in December 2022 in the west of the Antarctic continent, in an area that hosted five penguins colonies.

Based on current global warming trends, over 90% of emperor penguin colonies will be practically gone by the end of the century.

Emperor penguins, the largest of all penguin species, capture people's attention with their distinctive looks and extraordinary habits.

The story of this endangered birds and the effects of climate change serves as a reminder of the complicated web of relationships in nature.

In order to protect not only the penguin species but also the entire planet's biodiversity, it shows the urgent need for international action to combat

climate change and its effects.
