We are not talking merely about perfectly good buildings that were apparently destroyed without a good reason, but extremely beautiful and superior construction that was suddenly deemed unworthy to be allowed to remain standing.

The question is WHY would they destroy such great buildings just to replace them with ugly and inferior buildings?

It seems quite obvious they were trying to destroy a history of a far greater grandeur.
