In this video, I summarize a blog post explaining how animals were used in "serial passages" for mutating and engineering pathogens before the days of modern genetic engineering.

More than this, I show how it was done (with diagrams from E. Traub's published work) and why even today, it is still used for countries with active biological warfare programs to use this method instead of modern rDNA technology because it does not leave evidence of direct tampering, a history which is looked at in depth in my recent book on the history of biological warfare in the Cold War...
