Here's the Rhythm Breakdown on how to read rhythms. In common time, or 4/4, 4 beats make up the measure, or space we are working with. A whole note takes up that entire space, so how are the notes divided to equal 4 beats? 4 can be divided into 2, 2 divided into 1, 1 divided into eighths, eighths divided into 16th.
