One day, Athena, being a warrior princess, came to smith god Hephaestus to ask him to make a spear for her. Hephaestus was in the spate of unsatisfied lust at the moment, having recently been abandoned by his wife Aphrodite.

He attempted to seduce Athena, taking advantage of his loneliness and fulfilling his desire.
On the other side, Athena was battling to protect her honor from the advancing Hephaestus in order to keep her virginity.

She fled, but Hephaestus pursued her and grabbed her in the jungle. He compelled her to submit there in the woods. However, the attempt was only partly successful. Hephaestus ejected his sperm, which landed on Athena's thigh. Athena quickly wiped it away from her body with a woolen handkerchief.

Mother Earth Gaea received the seed, as soon as it dropped to the ground, and gave birth to a child named Erichthonius. Erichthonius was eventually adopted as Athena's son, and he rose to become king of Athens.
