On Christmas Day, residents in some parts of Germany were forced to leave their homes due to heavy rains and ground saturation, resulting in widespread flooding and high water levels. Areas in the regions of Thuringia and Lower Saxony were particularly affected.
Footage from the village of Windehausen in Thuringia shows houses, fields and streets inundated by floodwaters and displaced people seeking refuge in a shelter. Bodo Ramelow, Thuringia's governor, warned Monday from the shelter that it could be days before people can safely return home.
He said, "They will only be able to return when the basements are pumped out, when electricity is back on and sewage connections are restored."
In the western German town of Oberhausen, firefighters and representatives of the Federal Technical Assistance Agency worked to reinforce a dam on the Ruhr River with sandbags to prevent flooding caused by rising water levels.
