The bridge stood for 121 years and was once known as the longest & tallest railroad structure at 2,053 feet long and 301 feet high. It was partially destroyed by a tornado in 2003. The Viaduct has been re-established as the Kinzua Sky Walk allowing visitors to walk 624 feet on a high railroad trestle.
The “Tracks Across the Sky” also sports a partial glass-bottomed observation deck which gives the public a look down at the remaining towers supporting the historic structure. Just down the road from the Skywalk is the Kinzua Dam. In 1961, citing the immediate need for flood control, President John F. Kennedy denied a request by the Seneca Nation to halt construction of the Kinzua Dam. Upon it's completion, an area of 10,000 acres of the Allegany Reservation, almost one third of its territory, which had been granted to the Seneca nation in the Treaty of Canandaigua, signed by President George Washington was flooded. That resulted in more than 600 families being displaced and forced to relocate. Come along this week to see these amazing structures up close and personal!
