An Iranian general retracted his earlier statement suggesting that the Hamas attack on Israel in October was "revenge" for the assassination of an Iranian general in 2020. The general clarified that his comments were "incompletely conveyed" and misunderstood. The Hamas attack, Operation Al-Aqsa Storm, was initially linked to the U.S. drone strike that killed Gen. Qasem Soleimani. The U.S. Justice Department described Soleimani as a key figure in Iran's campaign of terrorism in the Middle East. Despite the Iranian government's denial of involvement in the October attack, a Hamas statement rejected the general's claim, asserting that the assault was primarily a response to threats against al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. The general maintained, however, that there would be a military response to the killing of Iranian Brig. Gen. Razi Mousavi, targeted in an Israeli airstrike for alleged involvement in supplying weapons to Hamas and Hezbollah. The general accused Israel of attempting to divert attention from its perceived failures in Gaza and labeled the airstrike as a war crime.
