Julian Assange's final legal challenge to prevent his extradition from Britain to the United States will be heard in London's High Court in February. The US authorities want him on 18 charges, including espionage, for WikiLeaks' publication of vast troves of confidential US military records and diplomatic cables that Washington says endanger lives.

Although Britain has approved his extradition, he is attempting to overturn the decision. Campaigners have announced that a public hearing will take place at the High Court on 20-21 February. Two judges will review a previous ruling that denied Julian Assange permission to appeal. This is Julian Assange's final opportunity to avoid extradition to the United States.

In 2010, WikiLeaks published a vast collection of classified files and diplomatic cables. This publication is infamous for being the largest security breach in US military history. US prosecutors argue that the leaked material endangered the lives of named agents. Assange's supporters consider him a hero fighting against the establishment and believe he has been unfairly targeted for exposing US wrongdoing. They also argue that his prosecution is an attack on journalism and free speech.

He spent seven years in the Ecuadorian embassy in London. In 2019, he was arrested for breaching bail conditions and has been in prison since then, awaiting the decision on his extradition case. Julian's lawyers have applied to the European Court of Human Rights to prevent his extradition. According to Julian's wife, Stella, the last four and a half years have significantly impacted Julian and their family. They have two young sons.
