Israel stepped up its offensive on the Gaza Strip on Saturday, with Hamas authorities reporting heavy shelling in several towns hours after world powers demanded approval for more aid.
On Friday, the U.N. Security Council passed a softened resolution to increase aid to Gaza, but without calling for a cease-fire. Some countries criticized the resolution as "almost meaningless."
