Sub-zero temperatures are complicating the fight say Ukrainian soldiers fighting Russian forces near Bakhmut on Friday (December 15)

A soldier of the 92nd separate assault brigade, operating a howitzer, told Reuters that frozen rain and snow covers the unit's drones and vehicles making it difficult to operate them and helping the Russians advance.

Senior army General Oleksandr Tarnavskyi said winter cold is exhausting for the troops, reduces visibility on their targets and leaves them exposed and venerable without the cover of the trees .

Russia claimed last May to have fully captured the smashed eastern Ukrainian city of Bakhmut, ending the longest and bloodiest battle of the war.

Bakhmut is a focal point for the Ukrainian counter-offensive, but Ukraine hasn't made major gains in the area.

Russia, however, has also made no tangible progress since capturing Bakhmut.
