Episode 1718: Sadness during advent - 8th Deadly Sin
So I’ve touched on Joy, Worry and now Sadness. If there were an 8th Deadly sin it would be pointed right at Catholics and that is Sadness. Why in the world would you be sad when you have the greatest gift of all and that is your Catholic faith. Let all the rest be damned. Get out of the funk and get Happy!
GK Chesterton said “the most compelling argument against Christianity are Christians.
Jesus addressed sadness in various ways throughout his teachings, offering both empathy and perspective:
"Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted." (Matthew 5:4): This famous Beatitude recognizes the reality of sadness and grief, promising ultimate comfort from God.
"Truly, truly, I say to you, you will weep and lament, but the world will rejoice. You will be sorrowful, but your sorrow will turn into joy." (John 16:20): Jesus acknowledges that his followers will face hardship and sorrow, but he also promises future joy that surpasses it.
"He wept." (John 11:35): This simple statement demonstrates Jesus' own experience of sadness at the death of his friend Lazarus, revealing his empathy for human suffering.
Offering comfort and hope:
"Come to me, all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest." (Matthew 11:28): Jesus invites those struggling with burdens, including sadness, to find rest and relief in him.
"The Lord is near to the brokenhearted and saves the crushed in spirit." (Psalm 34:18): This passage assures us that God is close to the sorrowful and offers them salvation and healing.
"I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." (John 16:33): Jesus provides peace and hope in the midst of difficulties, reminding us that he has already overcome all challenges.
Encouraging reliance on God:
"Cast all your anxiety on him because he cares for you." (1 Peter 5:7): This verse encourages us to surrender our worries and anxieties to God, who cares for us deeply.
"The Lord is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in him, and I am helped. My heart leaps for joy, and I will praise him with my song." (Psalm 28:7): This psalm expresses trust in God's strength and ability to bring joy even in times of trouble.
So if you are sad during this advent season just stop it. Stop being sad about your past mistakes or past transgressions. Stop being sad about today and just look forward and get happy that you are in the one holy catholic apostolic church and doing the will fo Christ. Chuck everything else and every morning ask Christ “what do you want me to do for you?” then live your day in true Joy because that is how you will go out there and convert somebody.
