Reports suggest that the airplane bombing assassination of Russian mercenary leader Yeni Pran was orchestrated by Nikolai Patev, a top confidant of Vladimir Putin and the Secretary of Russia's Security Council.
Yeni Pran and other top Wagner commanders were killed in the plane explosion, and it is claimed that Patev was alarmed by Pran's increasing influence outside Russia, particularly in the Ukrainian battlefield through his Wagner forces.
Nikolai Patev, aged 72, is considered Russia's second most powerful man, having served as the former head of the FSB security service and currently holding the position of Secretary of Russia's Security Council.
Patev and Putin have a long history of association since their time working together in the Soviet KGB in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg), dating back to the 1970s.
US media reports suggest that Patev took the decision to punish Pran after the latter faced criticism from Wagner's boss, and Putin did not object to this decision. The Kremlin, however, dismisses the report as "Pulp Fiction."
