According to a verse of the Holy Quran (42:51) itself, there are only three modes of revelation which God has ever adopted to communicate with mankind. Muhammad (peace be upon him) received the Quran through the last mode, i.e. through the angel Gabriel.
As soon as Muhammad received a revelation, he read it out loud verbatim to an assembly of his audience, and then at earliest convenience got it secured in writing through his special companions known as “Official Scribes of Revelation”.
Quran has been handed down through the ages by two independent mediums: through officially written and distributed manuscripts held ceaselessly by Muslim nations and households; and second, in end-to-end memorized Book form, recited and memorized in every mosque and religious seminary, and by a substantial portion of the Muslim population, from generation to generation, till today.
