The US Supreme Court has been petitioned by the Trump administration to reject an appeal court's finding that blocking absentee ballots in South Carolina by removing a requirement to witness them was illegal. While the Supreme Court itself struck down a similar requirement in Alabama, it is seen as unlikely to do the same in this case, leading to speculation that it is more interested in defending states' rights. Critics fear such a move might encourage a continuation of the controversial acts of voter suppression seen in some recent US elections.
