Strategic Analysis Australia's Marcus Hellyer says Australia should be "very worried" about its Navy capabilities.

Mr Hellyer told Sky News host Caleb Bond that Australia only has three capable modern warships.

"They're the only vessel that can really defend a task force or indeed an Australian city from missile attacks," he said.

"For the next decade, we're dependent on what we have already in the Navy and that's already looking pretty thin."

The US launched a multi-country coalition to protect ships passing through the Red Sea after weeks of drone and ballistic missile attacks by Iranian-backed Houthi rebels.

According to The Australian, the Albanese government declined a US request to send an Australian warship to support the effort.
