The San Diego Police Department has made public the bodycam footage related to an Officer-Involved Fatal shooting in 4S Ranch in early December, wherein a police sergeant was shot in the head.
Responding to reports of a stolen vehicle at a 4S Ranch shopping center on December 7, around 11:30 p.m., officers arrived at the scene. A 911 call alerted authorities, stating that the victim's car had been stolen and was suspected to be driven by Curtis Harris, aged 46, who also had an outstanding Emergency Protection Order linked to a previous domestic violence incident.
found a woman asleep in the passenger seat and proceeded into the store to search for Harris.
As officers approached Harris, bodycam footage captured him fleeing the store and then drawing his gun, firing at San Diego Police Sergeant Anthony Elliott at close range, striking him in the head. Subsequently, Harris aimed his gun at other officers, prompting them to discharge their firearms, hitting Harris multiple times.
The footage also revealed officers discovering Sergeant Anthony Elliott in the shopping cart area with a gunshot wound to the head. They administered medical assistance until San Diego paramedics arrived. Elliott was transported to the hospital in critical condition but was reportedly conscious and speaking during transit, according to SDPD reports.
Officers successfully secured Harris's firearm using a ballistic shield. While receiving medical attention, Harris was restrained in handcuffs. He passed away at the hospital later that night. At the scene, officers recovered the loaded gun along with a second magazine.
