Houston police release bodycam of officers shooting at an armed suspect twice and is uninjured

An officer who was following an aggravated robbery suspect through an apartment complex fired his weapon twice, but no one struck, the Houston Police Department says.

The incident began down the street around 9:15 p.m. Friday near the 13000 block of Cityscape Avenue.

According to police, a man was sleeping in his car when the suspect walked up and tapped on his window with a weapon in his hand.

The man got out of his car, and he and the suspect ended up on the floor fighting over the gun, police say.

At one point, the gun reportedly discharged one time, but no one was injured.

A witness saw the altercation and alerted two HPD officers who were in the area. The officers responded to the scene and gave the suspect and the other man commands to separate.

Police say the suspect then reached over and grabbed the weapon. Officers gave him commands to drop it, but he refused, officials say.

The suspect then started walking – and at times running – down the street, ignoring officers' commands to drop his weapon, police say.

The officers and the suspect ended up in the middle of an apartment complex. Police say the suspect, still armed, turned around, and the officer felt threatened. The officer reportedly discharged his weapon twice, but didn’t shoot the suspect.

Police say the suspect continued toward the back of the complex, threw his gun over the gate, and then kept evading.

According to HPD, the officers discharged their less-lethal CED device twice, but it had no impact. The officers then physically brought the suspect to the ground and handcuffed him, officials say.

Police say the suspect was taken to the hospital for injuries sustained in the initial fight with the other man.

No other injuries were reported.
