Former NAACP Chair: Trump Stokes Hatred, Gives Aid And Comfort To KKK

"What’s important is to get civil rights beyond history. This president seems to be comfortable with the history. He doesn’t seem to be, you know, frankly, he is comfortable with civil rights history. He is hostile towards those rights right now. And he is a threat to rights going forward. I got to say, I was a bit shocked to see how pastor Scott comports himself. I have never seen anybody from the White House responsible for constituencies attack someone the way he attacked you and Reverend Sharpton.

That is the most incivil I’ve ever seen somebody working for any White House ever be. And it really speaks quite frankly to this president’s lack of civility, the way in which he inspired hatred. You cannot go down there and say that you want a more just and more free future for our children when you still want the Central Park Five to be locked up and sent to the death chamber even though DNA has said that they had no part in that crime.

You cannot say that you want a more just and more free future whether you have your own DoJ attacking voting rights in this country. And quite frankly, this president has done more to stoke the flames of hate in this country and give aid and comfort to the KKK than any one person I could name. And so this president has a lot to atone for.

It is not surprising that he and Charles Evers get along. He is a Republican. He is conservative. He has lots of friends in the state, probably including Bryant who are very contrary to the goals that his brother fought and died for. So this president needs to stop talking about civil rights history and be focused on making civil rights a real for our children right now."
