Well, under the cricumstances and since he is not a fighter his moderate intervention prevented a complete beatdown. Not everyone can put a resistence not everyone is strong physically. He called the police.
These people risked a full beatdown. It wasnt the best intervention for sure he should have dropped the phone thing and focus on his girlfriend.
This is China though when everything is controlled. If you get into an altercation you as a defendor might also be accused for breaking up the peace and get the same punishment as the atacker. Yes, this happens in China.
