The Big Wheel stars Mickey Rooney, who plays Billy Coy, a garage mechanic who transforms into a championship race car driver. On the way to the top, Billy steps on friends and foes alike. The movie was written by Robert Smith (no, not that one), directed by Edward Ludwig, produced by Sam Stiefeland and also stars Thomas Mitchell, Mary Hatcher and Michael O'Shea. The Big Wheel is a true movie gem, and also marks the final screen appearance of Academy Award winner Hattie McDaniel.

The film was released on November 4, 1949, by United Artists to positive reviews.

Trivia: In January 1950, driver Bill Holland sued Rooney and the makers of the film for $250,000 in damages claiming that the film was based on the 1949 Indianapolis 500. Holland won the race and argued that the film damaged his reputation by implying he only won by a fluke.

According to Wikipedia and the Internet Archives, this film is now in the public domain.
