Godzilla MELTS Wonka as Japan Box Office Takeover Continues!

Timothée Chalamet is set to hit the big screen with the release of Wonka this weekend. The origin story for the fictional chocolatier is expected to win the weekend, but to say the return is underwhelming would be an understatement. A production budget north of $125 million on a prequel no one asked for and projections for a $35 million opening weekend is yet another example of Hollywood bloat that was the through line of the industry in 2023.

Guess who is doing it right? Godzilla Minus One is set to take on more screens this weekend as great word of mouth propels the Japanese hit to unexpected heights. Opening in the UK will obviously bolster the international box office and solidify it's world wide phenomenon status. Studio Ghibli's The Boy and the Heron dominated the week's box office and will likely be the animated movie of the holiday's when the other offerings arrive in the coming days. All that said and these films were made on a comparative shoe-string budget.

Japan is bringing the Western model to it's knees. Sucks to suck.
