In a recent announcement, Vice President Kamala Harris introduced the "Safer States Initiative," a comprehensive gun control effort aimed at curbing violence associated with firearms. The White House, in a press release on Dec 13, outlined the initiative, emphasizing its commitment to providing states with tools and support to mitigate gun violence and save lives.

As part of this initiative, states are encouraged to establish their own offices dedicated to preventing gun-related violence, enhance support for survivors and victims, and invest in evidence-informed solutions. The proposed measures include community violence interventions, Crime Gun Intelligence Centers, and the implementation of extreme risk protection orders. President Joe Biden had previously established the White House Office of Gun Violence Prevention in September 2023, overseen by Vice President Harris.

Additionally, the initiative emphasizes reinforcing responsible gun ownership practices, such as mandatory safe storage of firearms and reporting lost or stolen firearms. The Department of Justice has released model legislation to guide states in formulating requirements for secure gun storage, extending further support to the states in their efforts toward safer communities.
