Russia currently has a total of 617,000 troops fighting in battle zones in Ukraine, President Vladimir Putin said on Thursday (December 14) at his annual press conference.

Putin also said children of people he knows have fought in Ukraine as part of private military companies and some have died.

The Russian president added that veterans from private military companies who fought in Ukraine should receive same social support from the state as any other war veterans.
