Tributes are pouring in for Refaat Alareer, a prominent writer and scholar in Gaza, who was killed in an Israeli air strike in Gaza City. Regarded as the leader of a new generation of writers in Gaza, Refaat was mentor to writers and poets and a professor of literature and creative writing at the Islamic University in Gaza.

'Let It Be A Tale': On Refaat Alareer And The Martyrdom Of The Gaza Intellectual (Text and Video)
In fact, Israel carried out far greater war crimes than the choking of 2.3 million people. Fully aware of the extent of its war crimes in Gaza, Israel has systematically targeted Gaza’s storytellers – its journalists and their families, the bloggers, the intellectuals and even the social media influencers. Alareer reportedly refused to leave northern Gaza, even after Israel managed to isolate it from the rest of the Strip, subjecting it to countless massacres. As if aware of the fate awaiting him, Alareer tweeted this line, along with a poem he had penned: “If I must die, let it be a tale.” On 7 December, the writers’ collective, We Are Not Numbers, declared that their beloved founder, Refaat Alareer, was killed in an Israeli air strike in northern Gaza.

His home was bombed early on in the war, forcing him and his family to take shelter elsewhere, but he refused to leave Gaza City. In a poignant poem published on 1 November, Alareer spoke about the foreboding future he could see was inevitably coming. "If I must die, you must live, to tell my story, to sell my things," the start of the poem reads. "If I must die, let it bring hope, let it be a tale."
