Luke 23 narrates the events leading to Jesus' crucifixion. It begins with Jesus being brought before Pilate by the Jewish leaders, accused of perverting the nation, opposing taxes, and claiming to be the Christ, the King. Pilate finds no guilt in Jesus and sends Him to Herod, who also finds no fault. Pilate, seeking to release Jesus, offers to release either Him or Barabbas, a notorious criminal. The crowd chooses Barabbas. Pilate yields to their demand, allowing Jesus to be crucified. On the cross, Jesus forgives His executioners, promises paradise to a repentant thief, and breathes His last amidst darkness. He is taken down from the cross, buried by Joseph of Arimathea, and the women prepare spices and ointments. The chapter ends with Jesus' body resting in the tomb as the Sabbath begins, causing deep sorrow among His followers
In John 18, the narrative unfolds with Jesus' betrayal and arrest in the garden of Gethsemane. Judas, one of Jesus' disciples, brings soldiers to arrest Him, leading to Peter's denial. Jesus faces trials before the high priest Caiaphas and the Roman governor Pilate, where He is accused of blasphemy and claiming to be a king. Pilate finds no fault in Jesus but succumbs to the pressure of the crowd, leading to the release of Barabbas instead of Jesus. Jesus is then crucified at Golgotha. Mary, Jesus' mother, and John, the beloved disciple, stand near the cross. Jesus entrusts His mother to John's care. He speaks words of compassion and forgiveness, then breathes His last. His body is placed in a tomb by Joseph of Arimathea and Nicodemus. On the third day, Mary Magdalene discovers the empty tomb, and Jesus appears to His disciples, including Thomas, who doubts but later believes upon seeing Jesus' wounds. These chapters emphasize Jesus' sacrifice, resurrection, and the profound impact on His disciples.
