Global National: Dec. 12, 2023 | Gazans facing "catastrophic situation," aid groups say
In tonight's top story: For the first time since Hamas’s Oct. 7 attacks on Israel, Canada is now calling for a humanitarian ceasefire in Gaza, as international pressure mounts on Israel to show restraint. Crystal Goomansingh looks at the mounting destruction and devastation in Gaza, which aid groups are calling a "catastrophic situation."
Over in the U.S., Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited Washington, D.C., where he urgently pleaded for more military aid to help Ukraine defend itself against Russia's invasion. Jackson Proskow explains why the stakes are so high for Ukraine and what is preventing the U.S. from freeing up more funds.
At the final day of the COP28 summit in the United Arab Emirates, frustration is rampant because the current draft agreement doesn't include a global commitment to phase out fossil fuels — which climate advocates say is critical to controlling global warming. Redmond Shannon looks at how delegates are burning the midnight oil and what's needed for a deal to be finalized.
In Canada, Kenneth Law, the Mississauga, Ont., man accused of running several websites selling "suicide kits" to people who later took their own lives, now faces 14 charges of second-degree murder. Eric Sorensen reports on the allegations, what's known about the victims and why police won't identify them.
Plus, the COP28 climate conference has become a battleground for Earth's future, as countries argue about the future of fossil fuels. Dawna Friesen speaks with Katharine Hayhoe — the chief scientist for the Nature Conservancy of Canada — about the takeaways from the summit, her optimism about COP28 and other similar summits and why oil-and-gas-reliant Azerbaijan is set to host COP29.
And, family members of those killed or taken hostage in the Oct. 7 attacks in Israel are joining a coalition of human rights groups and politicians demanding the Canadian government to sanction dozens of people with ties to Hamas. Abigail Bimman spoke with the family of Nimrod Cohen, a 19-year-old man held captive by Hamas, about what they're enduring and how they don't even know if he's still alive.
