Kanji was imported from Japan over several centuries. But it's not just Kanji, you need to learn Hiragana and Katakana, as well as Romaji and Ateji to be able to read Japanese. Also, there's on-yomi and kun-yomi (音読みと訓読み).
The pronunciation of a Kanji also depends on when it was imported to Japan.
Kanji that was imported from today's Nanjing area during the 5th and 6th centuries is called Go-on (呉音).
Kanji that was imported from today's Xi-an area during the 7th to 9th centuries is called Kan-on (漢音).
Readings that were adopted during the time of the Heian era (794 to 1185 AD) to the Edo period (1603 to 1868 AD) is called Tō-on (唐音).
Mistaken or changed readings of the kanji that have become accepted into the Japanese language are called Kan'yō-on (慣用音).

Since Kanji were imported from China, Japanese refer to them as "Chinese characters". In fact, when a Japanese person asks you if you can read Japanese, they will ask you, "Can you read Chinese characters?" They won't ask if you can read Japanese.
