Six French teenagers have been given short or suspended prison sentences for their involvement in the murder of teacher Samuel Paty in 2020. They testified that they did not know the teacher would be killed.
Six teenagers in France were convicted of taking part in the beheading of a teacher by an Islamic extremist three years ago that shocked the country.
Samuel Paty, a history and geography teacher, was killed on Oct. 16, 2020, outside his school in a northwestern Paris suburb by an 18-year-old teenager of Chechen origin who had become radicalized. The attacker, in turn, was shot dead by police.
The court found the five defendants, who were 14 and 15 at the time of the attack, guilty of tracking down the teacher and identifying him as the assailant.
Another defendant, who was 13 at the time, was accused of lying about a classroom debate in a comment that escalated anger online against the teacher.
All were sentenced to short or suspended prison terms. The teens testified that they did not know the teacher would be killed.
Pati's name was revealed on social media after a classroom debate on free speech in which he showed cartoons published by the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo that triggered a massacre at the newsroom by extremists in January 2015.
The trial was held behind closed doors and the media were not allowed to reveal the identities of the defendants under French juvenile law.
