"History of the Jews under Muslim Rule"

The JEWS under Islamic rule were given the status of dhimmi ("protected person", referring to the state's obligation under sharia to protect the individual's life, and property, as well as freedom of religion, in exchange for loyalty to the state and payment of the jizya tax) along with certain other pre-Islamic religious groups. These non-Muslim groups were nevertheless accorded certain rights and protections as "people of the book". During waves of persecution in Medieval Europe, many Jews found refuge in Muslim lands.
