A powerful explosion suspected to have been caused by a bomb blast rocked a Catholic mass in a predominantly Muslim city in the southern Philippines on Sunday, killing at least four people and wounding dozens of others, officials said.
A powerful explosion, believed to have been caused by a bomb blast, occurred during an early morning Catholic mass held at a university gymnasium, killing at least four people and injuring more than 50 others. Local officials said the incident occurred Sunday in a predominantly Muslim city in the southern Philippines.
Morning mass was underway at the Mindanao State University in Marawi City, a public institution, when the blast caused panic among students and faculty members in the assembly. Campus security chief Tahi Mandangan said the victims were bloodied and scattered on the ground.
Mandangan said the act was undoubtedly an act of terrorism and rejected any idea of mere personal animosity. At least two of the injured are in critical condition, he said.
