The cassowary is a large flightless bird native to the rainforests of New Guinea and northern Australia. They are sometimes known as the most dangerous birds in the world. There are 3 species, the southern, the northern, and the dwarf which all stand out for their glossy black feathers, vibrant skin colors on their face and neck, and their helmet-like head cover. The ancient looking cassowary has formidable strengths, weighing up to 175 pounds and standing up to six feet tall. Their powerful legs are equipped with dagger-like claws, particularly the inner toe, which can grow up to 5 inches. Their diet consists of mainly fruit and other plants, in addition to fungi, invertebrates, eggs, fish, frogs, lizards, and insects. They uniquely spread seeds for 70 different types of trees that other animals cannot through their body elimination.

The confident cassowary makes low-frequency booming calls, which can be heard over long distances. They’re solitary and territorial, with each one claiming a well-defined home range. The male cassowary takes responsibility for incubating the eggs and caring for the chicks. They symbolize courage, protection, and self-reliance. When you need defensive skills to face an adversary, call on their spirit. Be sure to check out our website to get your free power animal reading and learn how spirit animals can support us.
