On Monday, November 27, 2023, at 3:42 p.m., the Fort Worth Police Department responded to a shooting call at the Fort Worth Community Credit Union located at the 6500 block of Brentwood Stair Road.

When officers arrived, they observed that the front glass of the bank was shattered and entered the bank while also setting up a perimeter. They did not find a suspect but did find a Tarrant County Sheriff’s Deputy had been shot and immediately rendered aid.

The preliminary investigation determined that at approximately 3:37 p.m. a suspect, later identified as Leland Williams, 35, walked into the bank and entered a fake name at the check-in kiosk and stated that he wished to open an account. Williams approached the counter several times without being called up.

During his last approach to the bank teller, Williams displayed a handgun and immediately shot Deputy Brent Brown, who was working in a uniformed off-duty capacity. Despite being struck twice, once in the upper body and once in the lower abdomen, Deputy Brown returned fire. Due to Deputy Brown’s quick response, Williams was not able to fire his weapon toward the bank employee and instead ran away on foot.
