Proxima Centauri, often abbreviated to Proxima, is a red dwarf star of spectral class M5 Ve, located at 4 light years in the direction of the constellation Centaurus; it was discovered by Robert Innes, director of the Union Observatory, in South Africa, in 1915. Part of the a Centauri system, it is the closest star to the Sun.
