Originally from Columbia, South Carolina, Charlie Bolden spent his formative years in the racially segregated South. Overcoming numerous obstacles, he achieved the rank of major general in the U.S. Marine Corps, served as a space shuttle pilot four times, and made history as NASA's inaugural Black administrator.
