An Easy vanilla extract made at home. Yes it is easy to make your own vanilla extract right at home. It's a simple two ingredient recipe, an 80 proof alcohol, in this case vodka, and vanilla beans. Yes it is that simple, all you need is these two ingredients and time.
The beans I got off of Amazon, they are a Madagascar organic vanilla bean a 26 count package. The alcohol needs to be a 80 proof or 40% alcohol, vodka works the best because it is flavor neutral, and I got the cheapest one on the shelf.
So the key is the ratio of vanilla beans to alcohol. Use a six bean to 8 oz alcohol ratio for a single fold. If you're warning a much richer double fold vanilla extract simply double this recipe to 12 beans for 8 oz of alcohol. Now patience is key for the very best vanilla extract because it will take 6 to 12 months for this recipe to yield the vanilla extract that everyone will rave about.
Simply butterfly the beans to split them in half and put them in a jar and add the alcohol at the correct ratio. If you want to use a smaller container than I have here simply cut the beans in half or so to fit them inside that container maintaining the same ratio of beam to alcohol.
