South Africa - Cape Town - 05 - December - 2023 - This year, 5 December marks 10 years since the passing of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela. It also marks the day on which Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe was born. Furthermore, on this day, the community of Langa, named after the AmaHlubi leader, Chief Langalibalele, who was banished to Robben Island in 1873, commemorates 100 years of existence. Langa was established as the oldest formally planned black township in the Western Cape in 1923. Under the Urban Areas Act, it was designed to segregate the Black African community from urban areas, in isolation from the broader economy, but primarily serving as a labour reservoir. The year 2023 is a special one, because it marks 60 years since the incarceration of Nelson Mandela and Robert Sobukwe on Robben Island.
